Hannes Schammann

Hannes Schammann is Professor of Migration Policy at the University of Hildesheim. He held several positions outside academia and still works closely with governmental and non-governmental organizations. Hannes is an appointed member of the German Expert Council on Integration and Migration.

Professional career

Hannes Schammann studied Languages, Business, and Cultural Studies at the University of Passau and at the Universidad de Concepción in Chile. He then spent several years working in the field: as a coordinator for integration projects (BAGEJSA), as a policy officer for integration at the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, and as senior project manager for migration and integration at the Robert Bosch Foundation. While working, he earned his PhD at the University of Passau. In 2014, he was appointed Assistant Professor (Juniorprofessor) in Political Science with a focus on migration policy at the University of Hildesheim. Since 2018, he has been a full professor there with the same denomination. At his professorship, he established the Migration Policy Research Group, which includes a "Research and Transfer Office for Migration Policy".

Schammann is co-editor of the Journal for Refugee and Forced Migration Studies (Z’Flucht), and a member (and repeatedly a board member) of the Network for Forced Migration Studies. He has been and continues to be involved in various advisory boards for academic and practice-oriented projects and organizations. Effective January 1, 2025, he was appointed to the Expert Council on Integration and Migration (SVR).
