Bast is the spokesperson of the interdisciplinary research group “Human Rights Discourse in Migration Societies” (MeDiMi), funded by the DFG. MeDiMi examines the conditions, forms, and consequences of the humanrightization of discursive practices in migration-related conflicts.

Professional career
Bast is Professor of Public Law and European Law at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), Germany. Before joining the JLU in 2013, he was a Full Professor of International and European Law at Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg. Bast has studied sociology and law in Frankfurt and Berlin. He holds a PhD (Dr. jur.) and a habilitation in law, both awarded by Goethe University Frankfurt.
