Panel: Multidimensional Perspectives on Wellbeing in Displacement: Innovation, Insights, and Applications

Abstract

This panel offers a multidimensional exploration of well-being in displacement, featuring an innovative metric and its applications, qualitative dimensions in refugee research, and a focused country case study. Paper 1 introduces the metric, assessing wellbeing in refugees and IDPs across Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Jordan, and Kenya. Our five-dimensional metrics uncover commonalities and variations, emphasizing the adaptable and universal nature of our framework. These results lay the foundation for deeper insights into factors shaping the well-being of displaced populations. Contribution 2 extends this exploration by highlighting the importance of qualitative insights. It emphasizes the need for methods like focus groups, case studies, expert panels to enrich understanding. Qualitative insights played a crucial role in shaping our quantitative tool and informing result interpretation. The third paper specifically applies our well-being framework to Syrian refugees in Jordan, offering real-world insights. It reveals limitations in current responses, urging a shift from camp-centric approaches to more holistic, contextually grounded strategies for both camp and urban settings. Together, these papers aim to stimulate discussions on improving the lives of displaced populations, challenging conventional approaches with real-world examples.
