Panel: The School Integration of Refugee Pupils from a European Perspective: An Exchange between Ukraine, Hungary, Poland, and Germany

Abstract

The integration of refugee children at school is a central task in the context of forced migration. Continuous schooling prevents disruptions in the educational biography of pupils and increases the chances of a self-determined educational and professional path, but the question of how refugee children can be educated in the smartest way has not yet been answered. Firstly, this is due to the respective national education system. Germany, for example, has a comparatively large amount of experience in educating refugee pupils; nevertheless, the structural and educational approaches are heterogeneous - not least within the framework of German educational federalism. Secondly, schooling is often only considered from the national perspective of the host country only, without taking into account interim stays or the option of returning to the home country. In the panel, we want to discuss this international embeddedness and the corresponding requirements for meaningful schooling by bringing together Ukrainian, Hungarian, Polish and German perspectives. As receiving neighboring countries, the presentations from Poland and Hungary will shed light on the necessity of civil engagement and the question of multilingual pedagogy. The contribution from Ukraine will discuss the extent to which the concept of global citizenship can empower refugee students to become more autonomous as well as the role of teachers in this process. In this interdisciplinary (pedagogy, sociology, philology) panel, the decidedly multi-perspective and transnational view should lead to an understanding of the new roles of both students and teachers.
