Roundtable: Decolonizing Research Practices

Abstract

Traditional research places much responsibility and power on the researcher. This has contributed to upholding hierarchies in research processes and the neglect of the research’s practical relevance, consequently damaging the relationships between researchers, practitioners and diverse communities as well as slowing down research successes and effective societal change. As these issues are often rooted in colonial mindsets and structures, decolonial research implies alternative practices. This roundtable will bring together international and interdisciplinary perspectives on decolonizing research and practice. They will highlight the importance of decolonizing research practices when working with immigrants, refugees and other marginalized populations. They will discuss their learnings from their work as well as its challenges and possible routes aiming to make decolonizing approaches more common and acknowledged in social sciences.
